Description:
The relief of Bastogne was seen as a vital first step in defeating the Winter 1944 German Offensive in the Ardennes. Progress from Patton's 4th Armoured Division had been slow from December 22nd to the 24th. On December 25th the decision was made to shift CCR (Combat Command Reserve) from east to west and try a new route to the beleaguered airborne units in Bastogne. Elements of the 26th Volksgrenadier Division and the 5th Parachute Division are known to be in the area.
